A few weeks ago I had the incredible opportunity of engineering work experience with McLaren Racing at the McLaren Technology Centre. As an aspiring motorsport engineer, a week at the MTC was a dream come true. I’m a huge Formula 1 fan so being able to get such an insight into the different roles of an F1 team and everything that goes on behind the scenes was amazing, especially from the team I support!
It was an extremely busy and action packed week but I loved every second of it. I was given the opportunity to explore what goes on in all the different engineering departments, from the aero to the electronics department, and so many more. I even attended a team debrief and got to watch the simulator in action. The highlight of my week was trying out car-build, there’s just something special about constructing something as powerful and beautiful as a Formula 1 car. Another thing that I found very interesting was learning a new method of problem solving that Kenny Kong described. No matter what career I go into, having it as a skill is so beneficial so I’m very grateful to have been introduced to it.
I was lucky enough to be on work experience the week of the shutdown staff barbecue, which was a great opportunity for me to mingle with the rest of the staff in a relaxed environment. It also gave me the opportunity to meet Lando Norris which was so cool!
I’d like to give a massive thanks to Jack Holden, Kate O'Hara-Hatchley and Paige Ell for organising the week and a special thanks to Thomas C. for mentoring me throughout it. Thanks to everyone on the team for your support and answering all of my questions! I’ve learned so much in those five days and been given such great advice about how to achieve my dream career. My appreciation for this sport has grown significantly and I have never been more excited for my future in it.
I wish the whole team over at McLaren Racing good luck for the rest of the season!
